Most licensed wedding officiants in Ontario charge between $250 and $700, depending on how personalized the ceremony is. A simple legal signing sits at the low end; a fully custom-written ceremony with consultations, personal vows, and rituals sits at the top. Here's what drives the price, and my own full price list so you can see exactly where every dollar goes.
What you're actually paying for. An officiant's fee covers far more than the twenty minutes at the front of the aisle: consultations, writing and revising the ceremony script, coordinating with your planner and vendors, travel, officiating, and then completing and filing your marriage licence with the Office of the Registrar General so your marriage is properly registered. With an experienced officiant, it also covers the calm that comes from someone who has done this a thousand times.
What moves the price up or down. Four things, mainly: how custom the ceremony is (template versus written-from-scratch), when it happens (peak-season Saturdays cost more with many providers), where it is (travel beyond the officiant's included range), and extras like rehearsal attendance or arranged witnesses.
My pricing, in full. I publish every price because guessing is stressful and surprises are worse. All prices are all-inclusive with no additional tax:
- Legalization of Marriage (legal signing with required vows): $275 in office, $375 at your location. Witnesses can be arranged for $25 each.
- I Do / Elopement Ceremony: $495, complete with vows, ring exchange, and pronouncement.
- Vow Renewal Ceremony: $495, custom-written for your anniversary or milestone.
- Simply Beautiful Ceremony: $595, an elegant personalized ceremony with all legal paperwork handled.
- Custom Planned Ceremony: $695, written entirely from scratch around your story, with unlimited planning meetings, help with personal vows, and special rituals.
- Rehearsal attendance (optional): $200 Monday to Thursday, $275 Friday.
- Travel: up to 60 km of return travel is included in every ceremony price. Beyond that, a travel fee applies and is always quoted up front, never added later.
Don't forget the licence. Your Ontario marriage licence is separate from the officiant's fee: municipalities charge roughly $145 to $170, and the licence is valid for 90 days anywhere in the province.
How to compare officiants fairly. Ask what's included: How many meetings? Is the ceremony custom-written or a template? Who files the paperwork? Is travel included? Is there tax on top? Two quotes that look $100 apart can be identical, or very different, once you line those answers up.
The honest bottom line: for most couples in Durham, York, the Kawarthas, and Northumberland, a professional, personalized ceremony costs between $495 and $695, and a legal-only signing starts at $275. If you'd like a precise quote for your date and venue, a consultation is always free.
