Tips for Choosing Your Officiant

Your officiant sets the tone for the entire ceremony. Here's what to look for, what to ask, and how to know when it's the right fit.

Of every vendor you'll book for your wedding, the officiant is the one whose voice your guests will hear the most. Choosing well matters.

Look for someone licensed in Ontario. This sounds obvious, but verify it. A licensed officiant is registered with the Office of the Registrar General and authorized to legally marry you anywhere in the province.

Read their reviews, and read between the lines. Five-star ratings are nice, but pay attention to what couples specifically praise. Are they describing warmth? Personalization? Calm-under-pressure? Those are the qualities that make a ceremony feel human.

Have a real conversation before booking. A good officiant offers a complimentary consultation. Use it. You're going to share your love story with this person and trust them with one of the most important moments of your life. Chemistry matters.

Ask about flexibility. Will they tailor the ceremony to your story? Can you include rituals (sand blending, handfasting, wine sharing)? Are they comfortable with both religious and secular elements? The right officiant adapts to you, not the other way around.

Confirm logistics. When do they arrive? Will they attend a rehearsal? Do travel fees apply for your venue? Get the practical details settled in writing before you sign.
